The New York Yankees may not have a roster of all stars right now and they may not be clicking on all cylinders but what they do have is one of the most consistent pitchers in all of baseball.
That's right folks. One of the best to ever wear the pinstripes, Andy Pettitte, has been the team's best pitcher in the early going this season.
In three games, Pettitte is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA, 22.1 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts. Like the 40-year-old lefthander has always done, Pettitte has been smart with his pitches, has pitched deep into the ball games and has given this Yankees' ball club a chance to win every night he has been out on the mound.
Last night against the Toronto Blue Jays, Pettitte may have allowed three earned runs but like he always does, he found a way to win. This is what Pettitte had to say to the media about his pitching performance last night in his team's 9-4 victory in Toronto.
"I knew I was going to be strong," Pettitte said. "I feel good, there is no doubt. I feel good with all of my pitches. My side sessions have all been good, and I feel like I have been able to get us deep into games."
Given all the injuries the Yankees' have suffered from already this season, Pettitte is exactly the kind of player you want to have on your roster. He has been through it all in his 18 seasons in Major League Baseball and is someone who knows what needs to be done in order to win ball games.
When Pettitte is on the mound, he shows this Yankees' ball club that he is in control. He knows the right pitches to throw, knows how to keep his fielders involved in the ball game with a lot of ground ball and for the rest of the pitching staff, he allows them to get rest as Pettitte can normally carry the team into the seventh or eighth inning on a nightly basis.
The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Yankees because just like he did when he first started with the Yankees, Pettitte is still on the mound winning games for his team.
