Hoffman's Rink Roundup

  • When the Rangers traded Marian Gaborik to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Derick Brassard, John Moore and Derek Dorsett while also trading for San Jose Sharks’ forward Ryan Clowe at the trade deadline, many wondered how the team’s new offense would look against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.
The fans had quite a night as Brassard, Moore, and Clowe combined for seven points as the
team beat the Penguins by a score of 6-1.
  • Speaking of the Rangers, how about the play of Henrik Lundqvist? In his last 10 games, the "King" is 6-2-2 with a 1.57 GAA and a .947 save percentage. On the season, Lundqvist is now 17-13-3 with a 2.07 GAA and a .928 save percentage.
  • How about those San Jose Sharks? Going into Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Stars, the Sharks have won seven straight and are one point out of fourth place in the Western Conference.
  • Just how bad are the NHL’s Southeast and Northwest Divisions? While two teams in each division is fighting to win the division and get a spot in the playoffs, the other six teams do not have a prayer at making the postseason this year.
  • Speaking of bad teams, it looks like the Calgary Flames have all but hit rock bottom. The team has just 30 points this season and is one point behind the league’s worst two teams in the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers.
  • After getting off to an 8-2 start, the Carolina Hurricanes have come crashing back down to earth. As of this writing, the team is currently 13th in the Eastern Conference and is just five points ahead of the Avalanche for last place in the entire league.
  • It is nice to see that the NHL announced that after there was no Winter Classic this season because of the lockout, there will be one on January 1, 2014 at Michigan Stadium between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. These two Original Six franchises were supposed to play in the Classic this year but because of the lockout, it did not happen.
  • The league also announced that HBO (Rogers Sportsnet has the rights to it in Canada) would go back to doing its "24/7" documentary on the two teams participating in the event. It is too bad that former Leafs' general manager Brian Burke will not be a part of it this season, eh?
